Inspection of the Condition of Cultural Heritage "Tomb of Ashik Çelebi" - Gazi Baba

A professional team from NI Conservation Centre - Skopje, as part of its field activities, made an inspection of the condition of the cultural property "Turbe of Ashik Chelebi" which is located on the very top of the Gazi Baba hill, where one of the first Ottoman literary figures and poet Ashik-Chelebi is buried. The old turbe burned down towards the end of the 19th century, and later a new one was built by Hadzhi Galib-Bey. The new turbe was octagonal of the type of closed turbes with a dome. During the earthquake of 1963, the turbe was destroyed and the same was rebuilt. In the vicinity of the turbe, Muslim graves were found which at the time were part of one of the largest and oldest complexes of Muslim cemeteries in Skopje, but also remains of stelae and tiles from the construction of the turbe from the Ottoman period. The unconscientious behavior by excursionists is visible through the graffiti written on the turbe.
